or Pozzuoli (anciently Puteoli), a town of Naples, in the province and 6 miles W.S.W. of Naples, on the E. side of the Gulf of Puzzuoli. It is slightly fortified, and contains a cathedral and several other churches and convents. It is chiefly interesting on account of the remains of the ancient town which it contains. The harbour is natural and well sheltered; and an active fishery is carried on here. The reddish volcanic gravel found in the vicinity is formed into a fine cement called pozolana, after the name of the town. Pop. 10,000.
