Volume 18 · 153 words · 1860 Edition

a sea-port town, municipal and parliamentary borough of Wales, in the county of Caernarvon, on the N. side of Cardigan Bay, 21 miles S.S.W. of Caernarvon. Its situation is very fine, commanding a view of the whole of Cardigan Bay in one direction, and of Snowdon and other mountains in another. There is one principal street, which is lined with neat and well-built houses. The town contains places of worship belonging to the Church of England, Presbyterians, Independents, Baptists, and Methodists; national and other schools, a poor's-house, and a town-hall. A large number of the people are employed in ship-building; and there is a considerable coasting trade. The harbour is large enough to admit vessels of sixty tons burden. Excellent salmon is caught here; and also oysters, lobsters, crabs, and other shell-fish. Pwllheli unites with Caernarvon, Bangor, Conway, Crickcieth, and Nevin in returning one member to the House of Commons. Pop. (1851) 2331.
