a fortified town of European Turkey, Moldavia, in the Bessarabian territory, ceded by Russia in 1856, on the left bank of the Danube, at its confluence with the Pruth, about 12 miles E. of Galatz. It has a harbour, considerable navigation, and trade in wheat, fish, hides, copper, wax candles, &c. The value of the exports in 1850 was £38,815; that of the imports, £35,593. Pop. (1849) 7314.
