a town of Japan, in the island of Kiao Sioo, in a fertile plain at the head of the bay of Simbara, 55 miles N.E. of Nangasaki. It is large and populous, and encircled by fortifications. Its broad, straight streets are traversed by streams and canals. There are here important manufactures of porcelain.
