a town of Portugal, in the province of Alemtejo, on a height near the Guadiana, 17 miles E.S.E. of Beja. It is pretty well built, walled, and entered by five gates. There are here two churches, a castle, schools, and hospitals. Some contraband trade is carried on with Spain. Pop. 5600.
