SESSA

Volume 20 · 105 words · 1860 Edition

a town of the kingdom of Naples, province of Terra di Lavoro, on the western slope of the Massic Hills, on a small affluent of the Garigliano, 17 miles E. of Gaeta. It occupies the site of the ancient Suessa Aurunca, and is indeed built on the volcanic tufa which has covered the remains of that town; for an amphitheatre and some other buildings have been discovered beneath the town. The modern town is meanly built, but is the see of a bishop, and contains a cathedral, several other churches, convents, and charitable institutions. Some of the churches contain good pictures and monuments. Pop. 4000.
