a town of Mexico, in the department of Chiapas, 46 miles S.W. of Ciudad-Real. It is the capital of a district, about 120 miles long by 40 broad, which formerly belonged to Guatemala; but was seized by Mexico in 1843, in spite of a protest on the part of Guatemala. It forms the southern part of Chiapas, and has a seaport in the Pacific.
