(anc. Strongyle), one of the Lipari Islands, 35 miles off the north coast of Sicily. It is about 9 miles in circuit, and entirely volcanic in its formation, rising to the height of 2500 feet near the N.W. extremity. There is a crater 170 yards across, which is continually sending out smoke and flame, with loud explosions, but no proper eruption has taken place for a very long time. Wheat, barley, cotton, wine, raisins, and figs are raised on the island. There are a small town and a battery on the east side, and some ancient remains throughout the island. Pop. 1200.
