a seaport and burgh of barony of Scotland, on the island of Mainland, Orkney, 12 miles W.S.W. of Kirkwall. It is irregularly built, consisting of one main street extending along the shore, and lined with substantial stone houses. There are a parish church, Free church, and United Presbyterian church; several schools, a public library, and a museum. Boat and ship-building is carried on, and there is a small rope-work. The harbour is good, admitting vessels of all sizes. The trade of the place is considerable. Pop. 2056.
