SZYRAN, a town of European Russia, government and 78 miles S. of Simbirsk, on a hill at the confluence of the Syran with the Volga. It is mainly built, and has unpaved streets. There are here ten churches, two of which are of wood; a monastery; an important cattle market; manufactories of soap and leather, and an active trade. Pop. 15,400.
