a town of France, department of Bouches-du-Rhone, on the left bank of the Rhone, which is here crossed by a suspension-bridge, 12 miles S.W. of Avignon. It is surrounded by walls, which are flanked with towers and pierced by several gates. The most conspicuous building is the massive and picturesque castle, which overhangs the river. It was founded in 1400, and is now used as a prison. The church of St Martha is a Gothic building of the fourteenth century, but some of its parts are considerably older. There are here also a town-hall, court-house, theatre, hospitals, barracks, and public library. Woollen and cotton cloth, silk stuffs, serge, ropes, leather, brandy, vinegar, and other articles, are manufactured; and boatbuilding is extensively carried on. There is an active trade in wine, brandy, oil, and the produce of the neighbouring country. Pop. 12,539.
