a town of the Chinese empire, near the frontiers of Siberia, 180 miles N. of Ili; N. Lat. 46° 8', E. Long. 82° 38'. It is enclosed by turretted walls of stone, and traversed by several canals. The population is variable, consisting partly of Chinese troops, to the number of about 1000, who form the garrison; and partly of merchants who resort thither for the sake of commerce with the Kalmyks. Silk and cotton fabrics are exchanged for cattle from the Kalmyks.
