a town on the north coast of Sicily, at the mouth of a river of the same name, in the province and 23 miles E.S.E. of Palermo. It stands on a hill, in the midst of a rich and well cultivated region; and is defended by walls and a strong castle. There are here several churches, convents, hospitals, and a college. The harbour is good; and corn, oil, and other agricultural productions are exported. The warm saline baths, from which the place derived its ancient name, Thermae Himereenses, are still in high repute. Pop. 9000.

**TERRATE**, a small island in the East Indian Archipelago, off the W. coast of Gilolo, in the Moluccas. It is nearly circular in form, and about 10 miles in diameter, consisting almost entirely of a conical volcano, 5480 feet high, densely wooded up to a considerable height. Frequent and destructive eruptions have taken place. Cocoanuts, sago, tobacco, cotton, sulphur, and saltpetre are the chief productions of the island. The town of Terrate is the residence of a native sultan and a Dutch regent, and its harbour is commanded by a fort.

**TERNI.** See Interamna.
