a seaport of Sicily, in the province and 30 miles S.S.E. of Caltanissetta, at the mouth of a river of the same name, on the south coast of the island. It contains a castle, several handsome churches and convents, a fine palace of the Duke de Monteleone, a public hospital, &c. The harbour is not very good, but there is a considerable trade in corn, wine, sulphur, and soda. Terranova occupies the site of the ancient Gela. Pop. 10,000.
