ISLE OF, the north-eastern extremity of the county of Kent in England, separated from the mainland by the Stour and its branch the Nethergong. It is about 10 miles long by 5 broad, and has an area of 26,500 acres. The surface is level and lofty, chiefly arable land well cultivated. Its N.E. point is North Foreland, with a lighthouse visible for 22 miles. Ramsgate, Margate, Broadstairs, and Richborough are the chief towns. Pop. 31,798.
