It consists of a single street, extending along the road from London to Ware; and most of the houses are substantially and handsomely built, though irregularly arranged. The old parish church has a square, ivy-covered tower, and some interesting monuments; and the village has another Episcopal church, besides Baptist, Independent, Methodist, Quaker, and Wesleyan places of worship; a grammar school, almshouses, flour and oil mills, a brewery, and potteries.
