URBINO, a town of the Papal States, one of the capitals of the delegation Pesaro-e-Urbino, 20 miles S.W. of Pesaro. It is fortified and defended by a castle; and, besides being interesting from its historical associations, and as the birthplace of Raphael, the town contains many fine buildings. The ducal palace is a magnificent specimen of the cinquecento style, remarkable not more for the richness of its decorations than for the taste displayed in it. The cathedral, and many of the other churches, contain valuable works of art; and Urbino has also a theatre, and one of the oldest academies in Italy. The house in which Raphael was born is marked by an inscription announcing the fact; but it is remarkable, that this his native town does not contain one of his pictures. Urbino has a large pin-factory, which employs several hundred hands. This town was formerly the capital of an independent duchy; and, in the fifteenth century was celebrated as the seat of learning and art. It was annexed to the Papal States in 1631, on the extinction of the ducal line. Pop. 12,000.
