a fortified seaport of Portugal, province of Minho, at the mouth of the Lima, 40 miles N. of Oporto. Its defences consist of walls and the strong pentagonal fort of Santiago, and the town is for the most part well built. It has three squares, three churches, and two hospitals. The harbour is small, but a considerable fishery and coasting trade is carried on. Pop. 8110.
