a town of France, capital of an arrondissement of the same name in the department of Marne, stands on the right bank of the river Marne 20 miles S.E. of Chalons. The town is modern, having been founded in 1545 by François I. after the destruction of Vitry-en-Perthois by Charles V. The town is clean and well built, with wide and straight streets, and has a handsome church and numerous public fountains. It occupies an important military position, and is enclosed by earthen ramparts and a deep moat. It has manufactures of hosiery, cotton yarn, hats, leather, and oil; and carries on a trade in corn, wool, wood, charcoal, &c. Pop. (1856) 7,151.
