a fortified town of the Prussian monarchy, in the province of Saxony, government and 11 miles S. of Merseburg, on the Saale, here crossed by an elegant bridge. It is a well built town with several suburbs, and it has two churches, one of which contains the remains of Gustavus Adolphus, a gymnasium, normal seminary, and several hospitals. Woollen fabrics, leather, jewellery, and porcelain are manufactured here, and there is an important trade in timber. Outside the town stands the old castle of the dukes of Weissenfels-Querfurt, a branch of the Saxon family now extinct. The castle is at present used for barracks. Pop. 10,291.
