a town of the Prussian dominions, province of the Rhine, in the government and 16 miles N.E. of Düsseldorf, on the Ruhr. It has two churches, and a Wergeland former abbey, now used as a house of correction; manufactures of cloth, and some trade in coal. In the neighbourhood are copper-foundries and alum-works.
