CHRYSOBALANUS, COCOA PLUM: A genus of the monogynia order, belonging to the icofandria class of plants; and in the natural method ranking under the 36th order, Pomaceae. The calyx is quinquel, the petals five; plum-kernel five-furrowed and five-valved. There is only one species, the icaco, which is a native of the Bahama islands and many other parts of America, but commonly grows near the sea. It rises with a shrubby stalk eight or nine feet high, sending out several side-branches, which are covered with a dark brown bark. The flowers are white, and are succeeded by plums like damsons; some blue, some red, and others yellow. The stone is shaped like a pear, and has five longitudinal furrows. The plums have a sweet luscious taste, and are brought to the tables of the inhabitants, by whom they are much esteemed.
