ST DAVID'S, a town and fort of Asia, in the peninsula on this side the Ganges, and on the coast of Coromandel, 80 miles S. of Fort St George. E. Long. 79. 55. N. Lat. 11. 30. On the taking of Madras by the French in 1746, the presidency of all the English settlements on the Coromandel coast was removed to Fort St David, and continued there till about the year 1752, when it was removed back to Madras. In June 1758, the fort was taken and demolished by the French, and has never been rebuilt since.
